What is proanthocyanidins opc?

Proanthocyanidins are a mixture of bioflavonoids with a special molecular structure, which are widely found in plants and can be said to be the secondary metabolites of plants, it is not a single compound, it is composed of a series of compounds, the basic structure is composed of catechins and epicatechins as monomers to form polymers such as dimers, trimers and tetramers, the structure is divided into A-type and B-type according to the polymerization method. The dimer to pentamer is usually called Oligomeric Proantho Cyanidins (OPC for short), and its physiological activity is the best, and it is internationally recognized as an effective natural antioxidant for scavenging free radicals in human body.

Although OPC has such amazing effects, the human body is unable to produce it, mostly concentrated in the skin, shell, seeds, leaves, rods and other parts of plants, especially in grape seeds and French coastal pine bark, which has the highest content. Due to environmental factors, its extraction is now mainly based on grape seeds as the most widely used material source, and proanthocyanidins (grape seed extract) is a new type of highly effective antioxidant with strong in vivo activity. It is generally a reddish brown powder, slightly astringent, soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is experimentally proven that the anti-free radical oxidation ability of oligomeric proanthocyanidins OPC is 50 times that of vitamin E and 20 times that of vitamin C. It is rapidly and completely absorbed and can reach the highest blood concentration within 20 minutes of oral administration, with a metabolic half-life of 7 hours. The nutritional food is also called "grape seed extract".

Grape seed procyanidins benefits

1. Blood circulation

In Europe, proanthocyanidins have been used for decades in clinical treatment to improve blood circulation, treat diabetic retinopathy, reduce edema and inhibit varicose veins. Proanthocyanidins can strengthen capillaries, arteries and veins, thus, it has the effect of reducing swelling and bruising. Capillary resistance is reduced and permeability is improved, making it easier for cells to absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. This is the function of the circulatory system to transport nutrients and waste products. Proanthocyanidins can remove water-soluble and fat-soluble free radicals from cell membranes, therefore, inhibiting the process of releasing certain enzymes to harm capillary walls.

2. Vision protection

Diabetic retinopathy, a sign of diabetes, is caused by microhemorrhages in the capillaries of the eye and is a common cause of blindness in adults. France has allowed the treatment of this disease with proanthocyanidins for many years. This approach has significantly reduced capillary bleeding in the eye and improved vision. Proanthocyanidins have also been used to prevent complications after cataract surgery in diabetic patients.

3. Eliminate edema

Edema is usually swelling of the injured area. Healthy people who sit too long can have edema, women can have edema before menstruation, sports injuries often cause edema, there can be edema after certain surgeries, and some diseases can cause edema. Studies have shown that edema can be significantly reduced by taking anthocyanins once a day.

4. moisturize the skin

Europeans call proanthocyanidins youthful nutrients, skin vitamins, and oral cosmetics. This is because it rejuvenates collagen and makes the skin smooth and elastic. Collagen is the basic ingredient of the skin and is a gelatinous substance that makes our body a whole. Vitamin C is a nutrient necessary for the biochemical synthesis of collagen. Proanthocyanidins enable more vitamin C to take effect. Proanthocyanidins are attached to collagen to stop the damage of enzymes that destroy collagen. Proanthocyanidins not only help collagen fibers form a cross-linked structure, but can also help restore damage from excessive cross-linking caused by injury and free radicals Proanthocyanidins are also additives to topically applied skin creams.

5. Cholesterol

The combination of proanthocyanidins and vitamin C breaks down cholesterol and turns it into bile salts, which are then eliminated from the body. Proanthocyanidins speed up the breakdown and elimination of harmful cholesterol. Here again, the synergistic relationship between vitamin C and anthocyanins is confirmed.

6. Cardioprotective agent

Proanthocyanidins not only help restore skin elasticity, but also help joints, arteries, and other tissues (such as the heart) maintain proper function. The vascular system, which is responsible for blood flow to all cells and tissues, also inhibits histamine production, which can reduce inflammation and help arteries resist the onslaught of triggering factors that trigger cardiovascular disease.

7. Allergic inflammation

When the body becomes inflamed, a compound called histamine is released, which can trigger the symptoms of the above-mentioned diseases. Anthocyanins inhibit the enzymes needed to produce histamine, preventing the production of histamine and thus reducing inflammation. Proanthocyanidins are well-known inhibitors of histamine, but they do not block other enzymes. Our bodies are over-exposed to chemicals and pollutants from food, drinking water, air, plants and animals (e.g. pollen) and as a result, allergies have become very common. The ability of proanthocyanidins to combat allergies and inflammation has been well documented. Proanthocyanidins have also been reported to improve joint inflammation in many people.

8. Varicose Veins

Dr. Haake did a clinical study in Hamburg, Germany and found that proanthocyanidins were beneficial for patients with varicose veins. The trial involved 110 patients, 41 of whom had calf spasms. The patients were given 90 mg of anthocyanins orally daily and 77% of those tested showed significant improvement. In addition, 93% of the patients with calf spasms had their condition disappear.

9. Brain function

Proanthocyanidins may help improve memory and slow down aging as well as the risk of stroke. Even after a stroke has occurred, the fact that proanthocyanidins can help improve memory and brain function has been proven in clinical studies.

10. Improve oxygen deficiency

Proanthocyanidins scavenge free radicals and inhibit capillary rupture and damage to surrounding tissues. Proanthocyanidins also improve capillary status and enhance blood circulation to the brain, so that the brain can receive more oxygen.
