Aloe-emodin actually refers to two different components in aloe leaves: emodin A and emodin B, which are anthraquinone compounds. These two components are considered naturally occurring bitter substances in the aloe vera plant. Emodin is found in the aloe cortex (the layer between the mesophyll and chlorophyll tissue) of aloe vera leaves, usually in the form of yellow crystals.
It is also the antibacterial active ingredient of rhubarb. The bacteria sensitive to it include staphylococcus, streptococcus and diphtheria, subtilis, anthrax, paratyphoid and dysentery bacilli, among which staphylococcus and streptococcus are the most sensitive. Aloe-emodin also has the function of inhibiting the biosynthesis of DNA, RNA and protein in cancer cells.
